Review:

Wonder to have a dreamscene like Vista on your Linux Desktop? Yes, we could. We may use xwinwrap (uses an xgl), it’s able to replace a desktop background with a movie or screensaver. Download here. But, if you just want to have a wet and splashy desktop, you may use xdesktopwaves.
In this article, I’ll explain about usage of xwinwrap only.

To use xwinwrap just install or compile (if we’ve *.tar.gz) don’t forget to install the dependencies such as mplayer to play a video, and you have an xgl and a “good” video driver, xwinwrap can run with compiz well.

Usage:

xwinwrap [-g] [-ni] [-argb] [-fs] [-s] [-st] [-sp] [-a] [-b] [-nf]

[-fl] [-o OPACITY] — COMMAND ARG1…

-g geometry

-ni no input

-argb argb, Alpha, Red, Green, Blues

-fs fullscreen view

-s sticky, on all workspaces

-st skip taskbar

-sp skip pager

-a above other application

-b below other application

-nf no focus

-o opacity, available value, between 0 and 1

Example xwinwrap commands line to use a video as our dreamscene:

$ xwinwrap -ni -o 0.6 -fs -s -st -sp -b -nf — mplayer -wid WID -quiet your_movie

NB: You may add -nosound line to run a video without sound.

Example xwinwrap commands line to use a screensaver as our dreamscene:

$ xwinwrap -ni -argb -fs -s -st -sp -a -nf — /usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver/glmatrix -root -window-id WID

You may change the screensaver, just change the apporiate screensaver to your installed screen saver on your system.

After successfully installing Ubuntu on my PC, I want to install KDE 4 Desktop to it. KDE 4.2.2 (that will be installed) have a beautyfull appearance even a little slow than GNOME for an old machine.

Now, let’s to the point :p

To install entire KDE 4 environment, just type this on terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

please be patient, the installation will be take a long time, depend on your connection speed

To Enter the KDE4 Desktop, just reboot/logout the system, change the session to KDE . . :

Optional:

1. If you might change the GDM to KDM as our default window login

   

just type this on terminal:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

and choose the KDM as a default:

1. Because my KDE application are not “arranged” in the gnome menu, I very recommend, that we’ve install gnome-menu-extended to make the KDE application have bundled in new sub menu on gnome menu (download here)

Introduction

After waiting for a long time. The brand new Ubuntu 9.04 was released at 23^th April 2009. It’s called Jaunty Jackalope. I think this release is very impressing, because it have a new linux kernel 2.6.28.11 which have more driver database and more efficient.

As fas as I use, Ubuntu 9.04 boot process is more faster with Ext4 filesystem support which have some advantages in energy use and performance. . .(to see more changes on Ubuntu 9.04 click here)

All right, now we’ll install the fast Jackalope to Acer Aspire 4520. Here is some stuff that we need :

• Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop i386 LiveCD ISO (download here)

• 1 GB or more flash drive, if you prefer use the USB than the burn the CD one

• a little patience?? just a little, because the install process is reliable fast

• Acer Aspire 4520, :p

• a cup of coffee and meal.. ,

USB Flash Install

In this install i’ve use a little difference procedure, yeah I install the jaunty from the USB flash drive, because my ODD was bad . If you don’t want to use this procedure, you may skip this steps.

Download the isotostick.sh script here

To make a USB flash drive bootable we’ll “install” our downloaded LiveCD ISO to this. The script run smoothly on a Linux platform of course (I used a Ubuntu Hardy). Place the script in the same directory with the ISO.

Here is the example command to make a Jaunty on USB with this script :

$ sudo ./isolinux.sh isoname.iso /dev/sdxX

which “isoname.iso” is our downloaded iso name and “sdXx” is our USB flash device

After a minutes, the live USB are ready to use. Just choose the USB flash as your boot device in BIOS.

The Jaunty Install.

Live USB/ Live CD comes with same procedure, choose the “Try Ubuntu” and the CD will boot up.

After boot process, the desktop will ready. Click “Install” and follow the following screenshots:

The installation just simple, but don’t forget to change our keyboard layout to “Choose your own” with USA – International (AltGr dead keys) so our Alt Gr will functional.

The screenshot is just for the example, I choose a manual partitioning. But the important is we have to have a Ext4 partition with “/” as a mount point and have a swap device. The other device is depend to your needs. If you have a question about partitioning, just ask me. I’ll help you as I can

Now is the user, boot loader and migrate steps . .just change as you want..and choose restart now to reboot your system and boot the HD to see the change!!

Finishing . .

After the LiveCD/USB installation finished, the Jaunty are ready to use!!!

Sound works!! Webcam works, install cheese to check it,

But wait how about the screen?? my screen resoulution is too big!! and the compiz doesn’t work!!

To enable the nVidia GeForce 7000m Graphic Card, just activate the propietary drivers via :

• System > Administration > Hardware drivers

choose the “version 180”

• Or type sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180 on terminal

We don’t have to enable the madwifi driver, as long the built-in driver works well,

to check this, type iwconfig at terminal, the wlan0 interface will appeared

Gnome2 globalmenu is an application or applet that make our gnome application menubar to be sticky with panel like the Mac OSX one. More info about gnome2 globalmenu

Here is the simple steps to install it on Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty:

Edit the sources.list:

$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the globalmenu repo lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Download and enable the GPG key

$ wget http://gnome2-globalmenu.googlecode.com/files/GlobalMenuKey.gpg && sudo apt-key add GlobalMenuKey.gpg

Update the software list and install the globalmenu:

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

Just right click the panel add the globalmenu applet . .

What is DropBox?? Dropbox is the easiest way to store, sync, and, share files online. Available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Visit here. It can make the backup/share easier!! Here is to use the DropBox feature on Ubuntu with nautilus integrated ready.

1. First, download (select your linux distro) and register your account password.

2. Then we have to install a debian installer,  just double-click
3. After that, kill the nautilus to restart it. so the DropBox will appeared on notification tray

4. To Start the DropBox, right click the icon and select “Start DropBox”. After a moment, the DropBox will started.

So the DropBox is ready to be used!!

nb:

• if the DropBox not stared, try restart X if kill nautilus not working.
• don’t forget to check the proxy setting

and check that your accout has enabled :p

• the DropBox “working directory” is $HOME/Dropbox by default

There are several way to reset a forgotten user password in Ubuntu, here it is:

1. Via Recovery Boot Menu (GRUB)

   Wait ’till the shell dropped, so you may easily change the USER password,
   $ passwd USER
   
   Reboot! And It works.
   
   FAQ : “My GRUB doesn’t have a recovery mode, what should I do now??”
   Answer : “See the next tips . . . “

2. If your GRUB doesn’t have a recovery mode menu,
   just edit the exist one.

   When a GRUB appeared, press escape, and “e” to edit a boot line
   at the end “kernel . . .” line add this line: “rw init=/bin/bash
   ” (without quotes)
   After some moment, you’ll have a passwordless shell like in recovery mode.
   
   So you can change the password easily.
   $ passwd USER

3. The other alternative method (Using LiveCD)

   Open a Gnome terminal :
   Applications->Accessories->Terminal
   , or
   Alt+F2, type “gnome-terminal” without quotes
   
   Mount your partition with ubuntu installed in
   you might just click the disk on Places, or
   
   $ sudo mount /dev/sda1/ /media/sda1
   in this case, our ubuntu partition is sda1, you’ve to create a /media/sda1 directory before if it doesn’t exist.
   
   chroot into the system:
   $ chroot /media/sda1
   
   change the USER password
   $ passwd USER

Reboot! And It works.

sleep with laptop -_-

I‘ve an Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy installed on my Acer Aspire 4520. It comes with some issues, sometimes can sleep/hibernate sometimes no. But somedays ago (I think it’s to late to write this :p), sleep and hibernate works perfectly!!!

Some causes that make the system couldn’t sleep/hibernate: (my experience)

• Madwifi, the driver is couldn’t unloaded during sleep process. There are some solution to fix it, such as create the sleep script to make it unloaded before sleep. But it comes a null (in my system). Dunno why . . .

So, replacing madwifi with ndiswrapper may fix it.

• Swap device, some configuration files may not synchronized. The swap device’s UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume and /etc/fstab is must be synchronized.

To find out the swap’s UUID :

$ sudo blkid -c /dev/null

my output (for example):

…

/dev/sda5: TYPE=”swap” UUID=”987a5827-3993-45f2-b584-a65aaf894bdb”

…

We’ve to use the UUID for the device with swap type (TYPE=”swap”), so the current active swap’s UUID is 987a5827-3993-45f2-b584-a65aaf894bdb.

Just copy it to /etc/fstab

$ sudo nano /etc/fstab

my swap line in fstab (for example):

# /dev/sda5

UUID=987a5827-3993-45f2-b584-a65aaf894bdb none swap sw 0 0

Just change the UUID to yours (printed by previous step)

Now go to edit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file

$ sudo nano /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

Do the same action copy the UUID, so the file contents will look like this:

RESUME=UUID=987a5827-3993-45f2-b584-a65aaf894bdb

remember!! use your UUID, don’t use my UUID :p (he he he)

Last, just reboot and try to sleep/hibernate, it should works!! amieeen

Owh yeah, i’m forgot. Recently, when I’m tried to apply this methode to my friend’s notebook, it fails.

But when install the uswusp, the sleep/hibernate works 98%

download uswusp here, install it, reconfiguring it:

$ wget -c http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=45483&package_id=38163&release_id=565128

$ cd suspend-0.8

$ ./configure

$ make

$ sudo make install

Some question will appearred, just answar it safely, reboot . . And it should works

To compress a rar archive in multiple parts, just do a command below:

$ rar a -vSIZE ARCHIVE.rar FILES/FOLDER

nb:

- SIZE in K is kilobyte, M in megabyte, etc

- ARCHIVE.rar is the archive name, it will be ARCHIVE.part1.rar ARCHIVE.part2.rar etc as the results.

- FILES/FOLDER is the file or folder that we want to add to archive

Now my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy have the gnome2-globalmenu. Recently my compilation of gnome2-globalmenu is always come with null.

Here is my way to install gnome2-globalmenu:

1. Install gnome2-globalmenu dep packages:
$ sudo apt-get install build-essential flex bison gnome-common libglib2.0-dev gtk-doc-tools autoconf2.13 automake1.9 libgtk2.0-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libwnck-dev libpanel-applet2-dev libgnome-menu-dev libnotify-dev

2. Add the PPA lines for gnome2-globalmenu
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ppa/ubuntu hardy main

it works with Intrepid, even Jaunty

3 .Update and Install the gnome2-globalmenu
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo aptitude install gnome-globalmenu

4. Add the gnome2-globalmenu applet to the panel
right-click panel > add to panel > global menu panel applet

5. Don’t forget check the “Enable Global Menu for GTK applications” and the other options in right-click > preferences.

but i’ve some “issues” :

- i’m forgot that i’ve vala 0.5.6 installed or not

- my globalmenu not works even restart X or reboot, but when i added

export GTK_MODULES=globalmenu-gnome

into ~/.gnomerc

It’s works!!! it’s odd, cause the original wiki tell that it’s not required
