To build gnome2 using the packages:

pkg_add -r gnome2


cd /usr/ports/x11/gnome2
make clean && make install clean


Now our desktop environment was ready! Hey, how about to start it?

To make our GNOME desktop started at boot time
add the following line to /etc/rc.conf :


If you just wanna test without rebooting your server, just run all of these services gdm, hal, d-bus and avahi:

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/dbus start
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon.sh start
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/avahi-dnsconfd.sh start
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/hald start
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/gdm start


To start our GNOME under X without using GDM but via typing startx add the following line to ~/.xsession or ~/.xinitrc for current user:

exec gnome-session
