Requirement:

  • Fresh install of Solaris 11 Express (tested on x86 arch)
  • SRS 5.2
  • Mine is Sun_Ray_Software_5.2 -> Solaris_x86_(32bit_and_64bit) -> V26331-01.zip

  • Usbredirector 2.0
  • Because in my case newer usbredirector (bundled with SRS 5.2) doesn’t works

  • VirtualBox 4.x.x and usb extention pack
  • Version between VirtualBox and USB extention pack must be matched

  • Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32-bit)
  • On my lab, i’ve used Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) but Windows XP Service Pack 2 (64-bit) should works

Steps:

Install Solaris system

  • Do a standard installation of Solaris 11 Express, no need other tweak or mods
  • Setting up static IP Adress
  • Needed, to ensure our server safe from DHCP issue

Download SRS

  • Download SRS 5.2 from Oracle
  • for example my downloaded filename is V26331-01.zip

  • Extract it
  • unzip V26331-01.zip
    cd srs_5.2

Install Apache Tomcat

  • Install Apache Tomacat for web interface
  • cd Supplemental/Apache_Tomcat
    gtar -xvv -C /opt -f apache-tomcat-5.5.20.tar.gz

  • Create a symlink to /opt/apache-tomcat
  • ln -s /opt/apache-tomcat-5.5.20 /opt/apache-tomcat

Install SRS

  • Installing SRS
  • cd /opt/SUNWut/sbin
    ./utinstall

  • Answer some question and do reboot
  • init 6

  • Install missing solaris packages as deps for SRS
  • pkg install SUNWmfrun SUNWtltk SUNWdtbas SUNWdhcs SUNWdhcsb SUNWdhcm

Configuring SRS

  • Turning On Lan Connection
  • /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utadm -L on

  • Restart SRS Service
  • /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utstart

  • Main Configure of SRS
  • /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utconfig

    in this step, answer the question carefully, such as kiosk mode activation
    If error messages appeared:

    /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utconfig
    utconfig: fatal, Sun Ray Core Services must be stopped prior to running utconfig

    Just stop Sun Ray Core Services
    /etc/init.d/utsvc stop

  • Warm Restart Sun Ray Services to apply changes
  • /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utstart

  • Enabling GDM
  • touch /etc/opt/SUNWut/ut_enable_gdm

  • Restart Sun Ray Core Services, just to confirm, maybe optional
  • /etc/init.d/utsvc restart

  • Reboot, optional🙂
  • init 6

  • Syncronize the Sunray Client Firmware
  • /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwsync

  • A little fix for nawk in Solaris system
  • nano /opt/SUNWut/lib/utdtsession
    and change ‘awk’ with ‘nawk’

  • restart from gnome panel
  • and check the “skip menu on restart” checklist

Setting-up web

  • Just do some tweak according to our needs
  • restart from gnome panel
  • and check the “skip menu on restart” checklist

Install and Configure XP for Kiosk Mode

  • Install VirtualBox on Solaris
  • pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.0.6-SunOS-r71344.pkg

    and execute (double click) matched version for usb extention pack

  • Install windows xp sp3 32-bit
  • Install vbox addition
  • Install USB driver for USB redirector
  • setting-up expand usb driver from xp cd
  • Insert Windows XP Installation CD

    open “Command Prompt”

    copy CD:\i386\USBD.SY_ C:\windows\system32\drivers

    cd c:\windows\system32\drivers

    expand USBD.SY_ usbd.sys

  • install usb redirector (srs-installer.exe)

Optional :

  • Enabling remote desktop access for VirtualBox
  • watch any error from /var/opt/SUNWut/log/uttscpd.log
